Some might cringe at the thought, associating lace with prissy wedding dresses or their granny’s doilies and curtains, while others will associate it with overly pretty, girly looks (imagine ruffles, bows and frills).
For those of you who bought into it last season, you’ll be pleased to know that lace is still going strong.
Ladies looking lovely in lace—from the red carpets to magazine covers—include Alexa Chung, Lana Del Rey and Jessica Alba, who recently shined in a luxe lace Valentino dress.

Contrary to its usual reputation as delicate and super pretty, the thicker the lace is, the more fitting it is for S/S 12. This season, designers have reworked the fabric, creating heavier looks and more dramatic pieces with the material.
Oversized reworkings of traditional broderie anglaise beautifully accented on crisp brights were spotted at Louis Vuitton.
Broderie anglaise is a good alternative if lace isn't quite your thing.
Preen’s take on lace in their S/S 12 collection revived this usually dainty fabric by teaming it with multi-coloured pixel emblazoned blouses, while delicate crochet pieces were showcased at Dolce and Gabbana.
Their delicate mix of bright crochet with a clashing pattern is a refreshing take on the craft.
The new lace pieces for S/S 12 look great when teamed with a boxy jacket or on a peplum dress. And the good news is that almost every retailer—both online and offline—is currently carrying great lace pieces, which leaves many options for every budget.
And, if you’re feeling really brave, go for bright coloured lace fabrics, which is the perfect look for the current season.
