V Magazine Does Elizabeth Taylor Tribute in Drag

The former French Vogue editor-in-chief unveiled her tribute to Elizabeth Taylor for V magazine’s Heroes issue this week, with model Ian Mellencamp dressed in drag. New York magazine has the exclusive preview of the spread.
Roitfeld, who is no rookie to gender-bending, stirred fashion elites when she helped to launch the career of “it-girl”/male model Andrej Pejic with an editorial in Vogue Paris last year.
Will it work again?
This time, Roitfeld has not styled her male model as a woman; Mellencamp is clearly a man in drag, who is dressed in a woman’s top and jacket with a small scarf tied below to cover his masculine treasures (just barely, anyway).
He holds a bride doll, and the spread is anchored with a quote from Taylor, “I wanted more than anything else in the world a man who could control me.”
The image is a compelling and interesting juxtaposition of gender views given the quote, doll and Mellencamp in drag. Click here to see the full editorial.
