The Who, the What and the Big Deal About Haifaa al-Mansour's 'Wadjda'

THE WHO:
Waad Mohammed, Reem Abdullah, Abdullrahman Algohani, Noof SaadTHE WHAT:
Haifaa al-Mansour, the first female Saudi director of a feature film, presents a film about a precocious 11-year-old girl obsessed with getting a bike and trying to be independent in a place that frowns on it.THE BIG DEAL:
What’s so wonderful to watch about this film is the slow disintegration of a girl’s innocence. As Wadjda gets in trouble and tries to swindle money for a bike, what you’re really watching is a regular kid make kid mistakes in a place that isn’t as tolerant or patient of it.Meanwhile, Wadjda’s family begins to slowly crumble under her nose in a nonchalant way due to tradition. It’s all interesting stuff and the film is done so in a whimsical way that makes it embraceable.
